every day brings another event that seeks to test absinthe's patience. yesterday, drunkards causing a ruckus in the bar. today, a kid who thought he could pull the wool over her eyes.[break][break]

it's always an issue with dealers. though absinthe has transferred to fully trusting rocket with the distribution of her product, pawns from the times before still seek to cause her issues. while absinthe might usually be able to take care of someone on her own, this kid, a dealer who's threatening to report her bar to local authorities, is being protected. all traces of him having existed in slateport might as well no longer exist. as such, a headache slowly blooms behind the chemist's eyes. she'll need to take care of it before shit hits the fan.[break][break]

luckily, aligning with rocket means she has use to all of their assets. it was rocket who gave her the contact of a skilled assassin, a man who she trusts will be able to track down the rat and slay him where he stands. that is why the woman awaits this contact in the slateport night market, hidden well among the alleyways and shadows hidden away from the bright neon lights of the marketplace thoroughfares. crossing her arms and leaning up against a wall, she surveys the nightlife crowd with careful eyes in search of ryker.

Ryker had been in the middle of training when he learned that someone was in need of skills. Not needing to be told just what that entailed, he simply nodded before gathering together his stuff and heading back to his room to get ready. As always, it didn’t take him long to get ready, especially since he wasn’t bringing his swords with him. Of course, that didn’t mean he didn’t have a multitude of other weapons hidden on his person.

He never went anywhere with at least some form of weapon on him. Though it often depended on what he was tasked with and which weapons he had on him, most missions did have him have his sword on him. However…

As he reached the night market and took in the sights around him, he realized he had made the right call by leaving his swords behind. In a meeting place like this, one that was so public, it was probably best not to draw attention to himself. Something that would definitely happen if he walked around with a pair of swords.

Speaking of, he wasn’t too keen on the idea of surrounding himself with people, especially ones he didn’t know, so he moved to the outer edge of the crowd as he navigated his way through the night market. Keeping the appearance of his contact in mind, he allowed his gaze to scan those around him, none of which matched the description he had been given.

Eventually, thanks to his plans to stay along the outer edge of the crowd, he would find the woman he was looking for. Making sure to approach within her line of sight, he inclined his head towards her. “You have a job for me,” he said, and though it was phrased like a question, it came out like a statement.[break] Absinthe Blackwood

absinthe’s sharp eyes catch the movement as ryker approaches, and her posture remains still, leaning against the wall as if she hadn’t noticed him at all. but she had, of course. absinthe notices everything in her domain, especially when it comes to the people who can be of use to her. the man before her is no exception.[break][break]

she meets his blunt statement with a slight, nigh imperceptible nod. "i do," she answers, voice cold, tone edged with weariness. "it’s a delicate matter. the kind that requires precision. discretion."[break][break]

she uncrosses her arms and pushes away from the wall, stepping forward just enough for the dim light of the alleyway to catch the glint of her eyes. “there’s a dealer—an old connection—who thinks he’s clever. clever enough to try and blackmail me. he’s being protected, and he’s managed to erase almost all traces of himself in the city. but i’ve got a lead. a single thread to pull.”[break][break]

absinthe’s gaze hardens, the headache behind her eyes throbbing as she recalls the details. “he frequents a dive just outside the market—the rusted hook. he’ll be there tonight, and i need you to send a message. no loose ends.”

While some might be bothered by her tone, he didn’t react. Emotions weren’t something he understood well, so a lot of stuff that might phase someone else didn’t phase him. It made him good at what he did, since he could just get to the point of the matter without fear of getting his feelings hurt or losing his temper over the way someone spoke to him.

Not wasting his time with words, he simply nodded to show he understood what was being asked of him. If there was one thing he could do, it was take someone out without drawing attention to himself. Or if she didn’t want him dead, to put the fear in him without anyone knowing it had been him. Though considering his line of work, he was pretty sure she was requesting the former.

Listening to what she had to say, his eyes narrowed in thought. An old connection? That sounded like someone who had worked together with her before deciding to double-cross her, and if there was one thing he hated, it was traitors. What a lot of people didn’t know was that Ryker was loyal, and he would go against anyone who tried to harm those who had earned his loyalty. From the way she spoke, this person was the exact opposite, probably one of those that could easily be bought if the price was right.

“So you want me to kill him without it being obvious he was killed?” he commented more to himself than her. It was clear he was thinking through his options. If it was obvious he was murdered, the woman before him would definitely be the first person the police would look at, especially if the people protecting him pointed the authorities in her direction. However, if the death seemed like a simple accident, then no one would be the wiser that it was foul play. Of course this meant his usual methods of killing someone were off the table. He couldn’t exactly stab the guy.[break] Absinthe Blackwood

a hint of a smirk tilts the corner of absinthe’s lips, amused by ryker’s accurate assessment of the situation and his almost clinical evaluation of the task at hand. "you catch on quickly," she remarks dryly, offering a vague sense of approval. "it’s appreciated."[break][break]

while ryker mulls over his options, absinthe’s mind races ahead, considering the potential pitfalls and consequences. the dealer had managed to cover his tracks well enough to make it difficult for her to find him; he might have safeguards in place in case something happens to him. and then there are the people protecting him, who could cause problems if they suspect foul play.[break][break]

"if there’s one thing i’ve learned in this business," absinthe muses, her voice taking on a hardened edge, "it’s that accidents happen. a drunken stumble down the stairs, a faulty piece of equipment... even the most cautious people can fall victim to chance."[break][break]

she meets ryker’s gaze, her intention clear. "so long as it can’t be traced back to me or rocket, the method is up to you. just make sure it’s done tonight."[break][break]

as she speaks, her hand reaches into her coat and pulls out a small envelope. she extends it towards ryker, a knowing look in her eye. "consider this a down payment," she says, her tone almost taunting. "there’ll be more once the job’s done."
